Survival-Horror is a mixture of two gaming genres, action and adventure with horror/suspense as the theme. While it started off as a sub-genre in the beginning, it soon became a main genre in the gaming world, thanks to games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Siren. These games offer not just a scary atmosphere but a fun and tension-filled gameplay as well. Other game developers are still jumping on the survival-horror bandwagon even to this day with new titles such as Dead Space (the third game in the series is in development) and ZombieU are currently the newest ones to join the list.
Of all the weird and wonderful games out there, there aren’t many genres that are as specific as the horror game genre. It takes a certain kind of person to enjoy games that are built for building tension and scaring the life out of you frequently, but the horror genre exists, and there are quite a few bizarre games out there that sit comfortably in this genre. Among the more unusual terrifying titles is The House 2, a point-and-click puzzle game that is heavy on the horror but light on the apologies about being as scary as it is. Many that have played the series’ debut game, The House, will know that this game is 99% atmosphere and 1% adventure, but this ratio seems to be a successful one because the series has progressed to a second offering in the form of The House 2, and it is now more challenging and more terrifying than ever.
There is nothing like a mid-week zombie apocalypse to sharpen the senses and keep you on your toes for the days ahead. There’s just something about the sudden fall of modern society and resulting the rise of the generic moaning, groaning, likely-incontinent (this never gets discussed in the films) species of the generic undead that is second only to the smell of the mixture of Napthemic and Palmitic acid in the morning. That’s Napalm. I’m referring to Napalm.
Over the years I have watched and enjoyed so many zombie movies. Some have been dire, some fantastic, while even at worst they have been entertaining. As a fan I can appreciate the skill that went into the old black and white horror films that although not full of spectacular special effects can be equally as frightening when comparing to the newer films of today. The zombie films of the new millennium are brimming with superb effects and are so realistic when it comes to violence that only those with a good stomach can watch without hiding behind a cushion for protection. All that said zombie movies are huge fun to watch plus I just never tire of them. Below are my top five in no particular order. You may or may not agree with my choice, read on and see what you think.
The House of the Dead 4 is the last in this fantastic series of shooter games but is by no means the least. It is filled with excitement, adventure plus everything you have come to expect from a good zombie game. Extremely fast paced, fans who have played the previous instalments will know just what to expect in terms of game play fun as well as the challenge it sets.
Here we have the third instalment of this series in The House of the Dead that by no means suffers from mid series blues. It is quite the contrary as the game is full of exciting shot gun action as well as a mass of evil zombies for you to destroy as you play. Round after round of ammunition will be dispensed before you finally beat the zombie invasion but its immense fun working things out, practising, learning the maps so becoming expert at this third sequel.
The House of the Dead 2 is a great sequel to the original game. In the first episode of the series you had to clear a house full of zombies created by a mad doctor plus save the lives of countless people. This follow up sees you back again fighting the zombies as yet another mad doctor decides to carry on the evil work of his predecessor who was killed off in the last episode. This time around you will be battling your way around a city not just a house so the mission has really expanded.
The House of the Dead is a shoot em up game that uses a light gun in the arcades but mouse in the PC edition. The story is based around the disappearance of experimental subjects created by an eminent scientist Dr Roy Curien, along with two AMS agents who are assigned to find them. Curien has become quite mad so producing all kinds of weird and dangerous characters. The characters have been released into the general population so our agents have their job cut out for them.
I so enjoy action games while I love zombie games even more. What could be a better experience then than an all action zombie story where you play the central character who has to not only destroy the zombies but also has to battle the army who would rather he sticks to the quarantine rules instead of trying to escape the zombie infested town.
Dead Frontier may be a free to play web browser game but that does not detract from the enjoyment factor or the fact that it is a fun game to play. If you re a zombie fan and fancy a cheap but cheerful way of passing a few hours then this is the game for you. The game is a top down, third person, arcade style zombie shooter extravaganza or a massively multi player on line role play game that is well worth acquiring.
Being a complete zombie freak this pack can do no wrong for me. I have savoured every Call Of Duty game from the very start and Rezurrection gives us a new map namely the moon as its central focus. The Moon has teleporters plus a pack a punch machine bringing a new element to this tried formula. It’s a game of strategy with challenging encounters while at the same time you’ve got hours of game play fun.
Don’t you just love a zombie fest? There is nothing better than a great video game where you spend your time eliminating the undead before they do the same to you, I just love it!Trapped Dead is one such game. Full of great zombie characters plus a good story packed with twists, turns and fun means us zombie fanatics just can’t put this one down. Now if you have read other reviews you may think that this is not so but I am not one to be swayed by general opinion, I make my mind up myself based on playing the game and I liked it!
Space Pirates and Zombies is a real time strategy video game with a futuristic space based theme produced by Minimax Games. It is a superb example of this genre where the player is in control of fleets of space ships together, or one at time. Arcade type action combined with strategy makes for a very involved game that will keep you occupied for hours while having great fun.
The story begins way into the future where the earth is so polluted that the human race has had to colonize other planets. The galaxy is randomly created every time you begin to play which is different, while your team of zany space pirates hope to become rich by hopping around the galaxy looting or collecting what counts for money in that era of time namely material that is mined from asteroids.
With plenty of zombie games hitting the portals these days we though we would do a piece on mobile apps instead, as there are a few early risers in the markets that are very playable and full of enjoyment. These four apps can be played on both android and ios devices. So here they are, let us know what you think!
We thought we’d give all you zombie fans a bloody good taste of some phone covers and ring tones with a look at the best of both on the net. Here you go
Last Zombie Standing is not a special site really...we just talk about lot's of things with zombies in, whether that be games, movies or books. We like to think of ourselves as modest writers who just enjoy a good chat about the flesh munching monsters that have dominated horror films and casual shootem up's for a good while now. We hope you enjoy our site and encourage you to join in with us by posting a comment on any of our topics. Enjoy!
